What is it about bees? Three experts discuss why they’re fascinating, why they’re dying and what can save them

TED Blog

In 1945, there were 4.5 million hives of bees in the United States. Today, there are just about 2 million. It’s been a subtle decline over time, but one that has dramatically accelerated over the past seven years. [ted_talkteaser id=1822]And this should be extremely alarming, given that bees pollinate one-third of the world’s crops.

In today’s talk, given at TEDGlobal 2013, Marla Spivak looks at why bees are disappearing. She highlights four reasons — many related to changes in farming practices — and how they interact to tragic end. But beyond that, Spivak wonders: what do these deaths mean for us given that bees, a species our lives are deeply intertwined with, have thrived for over 50 million years?

“This small bee is holding up a large mirror,” says Spivak.[ted_talkteaser id=416] “How much is it going to take to contaminate humans?”

Spivak is not the only TED speaker…

Navy Yard Shooting Victims Had Long Careers There

Black America Web

WASHINGTON (AP) — A dozen people died in a shooting rampage Monday at the Washington Navy Yard. It was the deadliest attack at a domestic military installation since November 2009, when an Army psychiatrist killed 13 people and wounded 30 others at Fort Hood, Texas. Early Tuesday, the stories of some of those who died started to surface.

Michael Arnold, 59, of Lorton, Va., was a Navy veteran and avid pilot who was building a light airplane at his home, said his uncle, Steve Hunter.

“It would have been the first plane he ever owned,” Hunter said in a telephone interview from Rochester, Mich., Arnold’s hometown. “It’s partially assembled in his basement.”

Hunter said his nephew retired from the Navy as a commander or lieutenant commander and had previously been stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. He worked at the Navy Yard on a team that designed…

Russell Simmons To André Leon Talley: ‘I’ve Done More For Blacks In Fashion And Gay Rights’ Than You

Black America Web

Once upon a time, you might have found Russell Simmons and André Leon Talley seated across from each other front row during New York Fashion Week. But this season, Andre proclaims that Russell shouldn’t sit front row. During an interview with The Grio, Andre had some interesting words to say about the Hip-Hop mogul.

“I don’t think Russell Simmons should be seated on anybody’s front row this week after having done that disgusting Harriet Tubman sex tape,” André said. “He is a man of great achievement. He is a great philanthropist — why would he think it would be an honorable thing to do? He said he thought it was funny. That is not funny, it is outrageously disrespectful to the legacy and history of Harriet Tubman and to the struggle.”

Andre want on to say that Russell should be banned from the shows this season. WOW! Banned…

Prostitute Stabs Man After Awkward Meeting At Liquor Store

Black America Web

My grandmother used to tell me that I should always look my best because you never know who you’ll run into in the street. I bet this isn’t the reason she had in mind. A Florida prostitute is in jail after stabbing a man she serviced the night before after she saw him in a liquor store.

Angela Dawn Specker got hit with an aggravated battery charge last Saturday when she cut a former john on his forearm when she saw in in a liquor store the day after she serviced him. According to the county sheriff, the 37-year-old Specker pulled out a knife and cut the man after she saw him and said, “Perfect timing.”

One would think the prostitute would be a little remorseful about cutting a random person in a liquor store, but Specker was apologetic at all. Specker told the cop investigating the incident that…
