Broken… but don’t stop believing!

Oh my!! –I was broken by rape! –but I haven’t stopped believing in abilities to overcome!! –raped when I was fifteen (by a deacon in my mother’s church! –became pregnant! –and had an abortion (third trimester abortion in NY –where it had become legal!! –I was left frigid and silent!!! –took me many years to recover (I’m 59 years old), and no longer keeping silent!!

White Mayor, Black Wife: NYC Shatters an Image

Another milestone is passing in America’s racial journey: The next mayor of New York City is a white man with a black wife.

Even in a nation with a biracial president, where interracial marriage is more accepted and common than ever, Bill de Blasio‘s marriage to Chirlane McCray is remarkable: He is apparently the first white politician in U.S. history elected to a major office with a black spouse by his side.

This simple fact is striking a deep chord in many people as de Blasio prepares to take office on Jan. 1, with McCray playing a major role in his administration.

“It reflects the American values of embracing different races, ethnicities, religions. I think it’s just a great symbol,” said William Cohen, the former Maine senator and Secretary of Defense, who is married to a black woman.

“One Small Step For Man or One Small Step For A man “…What did Neil Armstrong really say? …

moonprintWhen Neil Armstrong set his left boot on the surface of the moon on July 21, 1969, becoming the first person to ever walk on the moon. He then spoke some of the most famous words in the history of mankind, ”That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

So true, so brilliant, so inspirational yet…so contradicting? The word “man” and “mankind” are used synonymously, meaning that the oh-so-famous quote quite simply put was, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for man.” Huh?

A one-lettered indefinite article is all it would take to turn this quote into the inspirational words our brains all process when we hear them. That article is “a”- “One small step for “a” man, one giant leap for mankind.” That is how most people interpret his words and, according to Neil Armstrong, those are the words he intended to speak.
